I came across one of the coolest resources I think I have seen in a long time. One thing me and a few people were discussing about a year ago was the ability to create light masks so you can really alter how light is applied to a scene. Not just talking about diffusion here, but patterning.
For things like trees or bushes, I would personally recommend fake foliage. However, if you are trying to get like window panes, slats, or even stranger shapes. OR if you want to create rotating pieces of various types without having to drag along a very heavy industrial fan or something, check this site out

Basically, you send them an image file, like from illustrator, and then they can use a laser and cut out what you want from a variety of materials. They have metals, woods, acrylics, felts and more. Not only from a lighting perspective, you can make plaques, company signs, fabricated pieces for almost anything. Fake screens.
Even further, they can do etching as well!
Regardless, this is definitely an interesting resource that I am sure with a little thought could be put to use on a variety of angles on film production. If you think of something more that this could be applied to, definitely add to the discussion on this!
